Willie Stewart

Willie Stewart is simply one of the best endurance athletes on the planet. The fact that he has been missing his left arm above the elbow since 1980 has done little to slow him down. He was an undefeated Virginia High School wrestling champion, when during the summer between his senior year of high school and his freshman year of college, he lost his arm in a tragic accident while working in the Watergate Building in Washington, DC. He was also the captain of the Washington Rugby Club at the time and, even without the use of one arm, was still one of the best players in the league. His accomplishments as a runner, triathlete, off-road triathlete and cross country skier include a 2:41 marathon, a 10:45 at the Ironman Triathlon, an overall win at the Catalina Marathon, the first challenged athlete to start and finish an adventure race and a silver medal in cross country skiing at the Paralympics, and has won three world championships in triathlon and duathlon. Outside of sports, he has been a role model and a mentor for countless soldiers who have lost limbs in battle. He looks at the people he has motivated to get off the couch and re-invent themselves as his real triumphs. "Sports makes me whole," says Stewart. "I know how important it is to anyone who has gone through trauma, to get back into fitness." He has met with President Clinton and President Bush twice each to talk about the rights and needs of the disabled and he carried the Olympic Torch to the White House. The story of Stewart's solo kayak of the Grand Canyon was chronicled in Reader's Digest in addition to a documentary short film on him was completed in 2007 by noted filmmaker Patricia Thio. He currently directs the PossAbilities Program at Loma Linda University Medical Center East Campus and serves as an ambassador for the Challenged Athletes Foundation
