Dan Davies

It is not in the joyous days but in the toughest times that we grow and truly discover ourselves. These words became clear in the life of Dan Davies in ways he would never expect. In the early morning hours of March 9, 2007 Dan was on duty as a police officer for the City of San Bernardino. While enroute to assist a fellow officer a stray dog quickly entered the roadway feet from his fast moving police vehicle. Instinctively swerving to avoid the dog Dan lost control of his vehicle which immediately overturned and slid into a roadside building. After being rushed to the hospital Dan was told that the force of the collision had fractured several vertebrae requiring extensive surgery in an effort to maintain spinal integrity. Surgeons then discovered that bone fragments had severed his spinal cord leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Less than a year after his life changing injury Dan was inspired by his new wife Jodie Davies and members of the PossAbilities organization to began training and competing in the grueling sport of triathlon. With constant encouragement from fellow disabled athletes and the PossAbilities program Dan again discovered his self confidence over the last year racing adaptive cycles and competing in triathlons across the nation. During this time he has uncovered the therapeutic benefits of sport for the entire person; mind, body, and soul. Dan lives with a renewed faith in Jesus Christ and understanding that there is peace in acceptance. Consoling and sharing with those who face the same challenges has become one of his greatest desires. Serving as a mentor in the PossAbilities peer support program has allowed him to encourage other disabled individuals. Dan feels that he may have lost his legs but has found himself, his purpose and his joy.
